Epic heavy metal lives and dies on conviction. Riffs are easy. Leather is cheap. Belief is rare. That’s what separates posturing from legacy, and it’s exactly where Ravenspell plant their flag on Obsidian King, the band’s debut full-length, arriving March 12, 2026 via Fighter Records.
From the first scream and opening salvo of “God The Watcher,” Ravenspell waste no time establishing their world. This is classic heavy metal in spirit, not cosplay—fluid guitar leads, charging rhythms, and melodies that feel earned rather than pasted on. There’s momentum here, and more importantly, purpose.
“Onwards We March” lives up to its title, driven by galloping riffs and ironclad pacing that hit straight at the core of traditional metal songwriting. As Obsidian King unfolds, it only grows stronger, pulling the listener deeper into its twilight realm of steel, shadow, and myth. “Obsidian Wing” delivers one of the album’s standout moments—a soaring, unforgettable chorus rising out of thunderous instrumentation, while “Hellstorm” injects pure adrenaline without sacrificing melody or structure.
Then there’s “Raise Hell,” a genuine heavy metal highlight, balancing commanding vocal lines with shimmering lead guitar work that recalls the genre’s golden era without sounding stuck in it. The album closes with “Atilla,” a sweeping, epic finale that moves confidently through classical guitar passages, doom-tinged riffs, cascading drums, and expansive instrumental sections. It’s ambitious, cinematic, and lands exactly where it should—large, resolute, and memorable.
Production duties were handled by David Lizotte (Ültra Raptör, Saccage), and the mix serves the material well: organic, textured, and alive. No artificial gloss, no modern sterility—just a sound that captures sweat, steel, and intent. Visually, the album is completed by striking artwork from Canadian artist Carl Lavoie, reinforcing the album’s mythic weight and sense of scale.
In an era saturated with imitation and irony, Obsidian King feels refreshingly sincere. This is heavy metal that believes in itself—and invites you to believe with it. Ravenspell aren’t revisiting a legend. They’re starting one.
