Russian brutal death metal outfit Cranial Osteotomy have resurfaced with their long-awaited sophomore album, Vortex Of The Dark Knowledge, marking their first full-length release since 2011’s Victim Of Wicked Sickness. After more than a decade of relative quiet, punctuated only by scattered demos and a lone single, the band’s return lands with the kind of force longtime fans had nearly written off.
Set for release July 10 via Comatose Music, the new album leans fully into the band’s established identity: unrelenting brutality, suffocating atmosphere, and a fixation on grotesque sonic imagery. The opening track, “Praecursor,” sets the tone with a slow descent into tension before erupting into the chaotic assault of “Thanatomorpheus.” From there, the record moves through a barrage of blast-driven intensity and surgical riff work, with standout cuts like “Structures Of Decadence Impurity,” “Cathedral Butchery Feast,” and the title track delivering sustained, punishing momentum.
Production duties were split between Impulse Studios (mixing) and Gravestone Studios (mastering), giving the record a dense, crushing sonic profile that complements its thematic weight. Visually, the album is anchored by artwork from Marco Hasmann, known for his work with bands such as Kraanium and Fleshgod Apocalypse, reinforcing the record’s bleak and visceral aesthetic.
Vortex Of The Dark Knowledge arrives as a reminder that even after extended silence, some bands return not with reinvention, but with refinement—doubling down on the extremity that defined them in the first place.
