By Seth Metoyer,
Black Metal is one of those niche genres that has an extremely die-hard following. I have never personally been what I'd consider a huge black metal fan, which is strange considering my 23 and Me DNA report shows that the majority of my ancestry is Norwegian. I do love me some Horde, though. And, hey, I do get the interest from an aesthetic standpoint. The music is heavy, and brooding, along with a long history of dark and cold Scandinavian nights. I want to start a fire just to get warm thinking about it. I think the part for me that's been difficult to get into is the repetition and length of most black metal songs. Then again, I'm a grindcore metal fan, and those songs can be repetitive and very short in length, which a lot of people dislike.
Now back to important black metal information. Blacforje Magazine is a new publication dedicated to covering black metal and its various sub-genres, including blackgaze, atmospheric black metal, and blackwave. According to the official Blacforje website, the magazine was Forged in 2023 by Andrew Voigt (great guy), former Director of Social Media and Contributing Writer at HM Magazine, and is "designed to provide a premier journalistic experience for bands and artists who often get overlooked in mainstream publications, as well as continued exposure for some of the stalwarts of the genre." The publication also strives "to cover bands and artists that have a message of beauty, contemplation, spirituality, and introspection. We will cover any bands or artists with various worldviews with discretion based on messaging in order to ensure we stay true to our values."
