Leeds-based progressive death metal force Cognizance have released their latest full-length, In Light, No Shape, through Willowtip Records—a record already drawing strong critical response across the extreme metal press.
Four albums deep, Cognizance continue to refine a sound built on technical precision and forward-thinking composition. In Light, No Shape leans into a more organic, visceral production style, stepping away from overly polished modern trends in favor of something sharper and more immediate. The result is a dense, dynamic listen—balancing intricate riff work, complex rhythmic shifts, and atmospheric layering that nods to the legacy of acts like Death and Meshuggah while maintaining a distinct identity.
The album also marks a significant internal shift, with founding guitarist Alex Baillie stepping into the vocalist role following the 2023 departure of longtime frontman Henry “Big Mac” Pryce. Baillie described the transition as a creative reset, pushing the band to “re-engineer” their approach and unlock new directions within their established framework.
Featuring tracks such as “A Game of Proliferation,” “Witness Marks,” and “The Zone,” the album showcases a band doubling down on both aggression and ambition. Production was handled by Ronnie Björnström (mix/master), with artwork from Jef Whitehead (Leviathan, Nails), further reinforcing the record’s blend of technical extremity and artistic depth.
Early reviews have positioned In Light, No Shape as a standout in the current tech-death landscape, with multiple outlets calling it a contender for album of the year within the genre.
